The Welsh city of Canton is a community located in the western district of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. You can find it about 2 miles west of Cardiff and it is one of the larger, more ethnically diverse suburbs in the region sporting a large Indian and Pakistani population. The total population is just over 13,000, but it has been increasing by leaps and bounds since the turn of the 21st century.
 
The name of the community comes from a sixth century female saint who also has the community of Pontcanna named for her. Interestingly enough, the saint who was known as Canna is reported to be a relative of King Arthur himself. Also known as Treganna, the name in part derives from a manor constructed in the 13th century in Llandaff. It became part of the Cardiff during the Victorian era in 1875.

History of Canton

The history of this community was established in the 13th century with the construction of a manor in Cardiff and combined with the assumed lands from the Leckwith and Llandaff parishes. At the time, the jurisdiction came from the Earl de Kanetune, however today it derives from the Manor of Llandaff. The charter for the parish was signed in 1230 and from there the town became a popular medieval marketplace.

Known as the Canton Cross, this was one of the most important marketplaces in all of South Wales. It was open six days a week and covered a wide area in the community that was located where Llandaff Road and Leckwith Road meet. Today, the Canton Cross Vaults public house is located in the area.

You could find all manner of goods at the Canton Cross market from fresh foods, household items, and even live animals. Items were regularly imported and exported through the market which stayed for centuries.

The diversity of Canton certainly derives in part from its economic opportunity combined with its rich history of being a crossroads in the area. The large groups of minorities in the area support a number of shops, pubs, and restaurants which are highly frequented on a daily basis. There is a strong working class ethic in the city combined with its diversity which makes it unique in Wales.
