Located in county Cambridgeshire, Witchford is an English village located near Ely in eastern England.

The village, often seen in historical texts as Wycheford, began with the building of the village church, St. Andrews, in 1226. The church is now a member of Church of England. A Baptist Church was also erected much later in the town’s history.

Witchford was known for many years as a centre for horse trading, but that largely ended by the 20th century. The Grunty Fen Drain was the most famous thing in the village for many years, which ran throughout the main street and reportedly had quite the odour. This drained water from the marsh areas in the woodland of Witchford. The issues were remedied by the late 19th century.

While the current population of Witchford is not large, the town saw increased development after the opening of a Royal Air Force (RAF) station in the town in 1942, RAF Witchford. The RAF station was home base for the RAF Bomber Command, namely the Vickers Wellington bombers of Squadron 106 and later, Squadron 115, the Flying Avro Lancasters.  After World War II ended, the station was closed and was planned to become a missile launch site, but this plan never developed. The location of the previous RAF station is now an industrial park. The citizens of Witchford are proud of this history and their role in the success of England in World War II; as such they have dedicated a museum in the village to the station and its troops.

Witchford’s location within the marshes of eastern England meant the village was, in its early years, an island community. With the fens being slowly drained beginning in the 1800s, the community became known for the drainage of the marsh which apparently left quite an odour within the town. The Grunty Fen Drain was covered and eventually eliminated and much of the land became fertile agricultural fields and cow pasture. The undeveloped woodlands and marshes provide a home to many different forms of wildlife, flora, and fauna. Fishing, fowl hunting, and birdwatching are common activities to participate in while in Witchford. There is also an extensive series of footpaths in the village, known as Witchford Walks, which are well maintained for nature walks and exploring.
