An ancient but beautiful town, Upware is a community called a hamlet within the Wicken Civil Parish that is located in a part of East Cambridgeshire, England. This hamlet is a well appointed historical site with a history that goes back as far as the tenth century, in which its name also carries the same legacy. Many believe that the name is derived from a fishing weir located nearby, especially due to the riverside importance of this town's existence for years. A public house, called the Black Swan, was constructed in 1760s to service the common river traffic and within fifty years it became the Lord Nelson. Because of its location in respects to surrounding essentials, this building quickly became known as the ‘Five Miles From Anywhere: No Hurry’.

After the building hadn't been repaired or maintained for numerous years, it closed in 1950 only to be demolished six years later due to a fire. Today, there sits a building built in 1980 that is now called the ‘Five Miles From Anywhere Inn’.

Due to its riverside location and the vast amount of riverside culture it has experienced, this town has even been shelter to a branch of the Cambridgeshire Environmental Education Service. In the 1850s, Upware had a pub that served as a meeting place and a stress-relieving spot for the Upware Republic which was a gathering of about three hundred Undergraduates from the Cambridge University; giving way to a tradition that has yet to be exhausted. Like the Upware Republic, many people travel to Upware for the water fun of the Cam and the common festivals that make a temporary home to this hamlet. Art, music, culture, boats, and a number of other subjects find their way into the hamlet by the many festivities and people attracted to the area.

As previously mentioned, the history of Upware, Cambridgeshire is vast but it's also what has helped to mold the area into the beautiful, active, and vibrant place it is today; from the forty-foot moat in the neighboring Cam River that is believed to be a civil war fortification from the 1640s to the legends of the ‘King of Upware’, R.R. Fielder, that would spend his time at the Pub drinking and fighting boat-workers, this hamlet of a town will never leave you bored or without a bright piece of your day being something from Upware.
