Belonging to the district of South Cambridgeshire, Stow-Cum-Quy is a parish situated at about five miles east of the City of Cambridge. Also referred to as Quy, this village lies between Burwell Road and Newmarket Road. Covering an area of 764 hectares, Stow-Cum-Quy is visited by tourists looking for relaxation and respite. While it only has a small population of around 500 in 2012, it has excellent places of interest.

Stow-Cum-Quy History

This picturesque village has the origin of its name from two settlements or hamlets located on the crossroads. These two places dates back to ancient Roman times where “Stow” means “high or holy place” and “Quy” means “Cow Island”. Stow, being the high land is located 50 feet above sea level and in medieval times, was referred to as “Stowe Quye”. These two places were joined as one in 1100.

This village has a long history and is said to have existed as early as the Bronze Age as evidenced by the remains discovered in the parish, a Roman villa west of Quy Hall. Despite the joining of these two Saxon settlements, there were separate manors that time and during the 13th century, it became a single ecclesiastical parish.

Stow-Cum-Quy is also a perfect place to get married in and is ideal for special occasions and functions. The Village Hall can accommodate up to 150 people for events like weddings, parties and business meetings. Church of St. Mary’s

This has been in existence since the 12th century with its chancel and nave constructed around 1340. Apart from being one of the oldest structures in the area, this place of worship offers a venue for reflection and some quiet time.

Fenland Country Fair

For a holiday in the month of August, you can experience county life in summer and enjoy family activities. This year, it will be held on the 27th and 28th of August. Events include pigeon clay shooting, archery, cookery demonstrations and displays.
