Located about 8 ½ miles southwest of Cambridge, New Wimpole is a village that is both charming and eye-catching in terms of its appearance and contributions as well. The name of “Wimpole” comes from the phrase, “pool of a man named Wina”. The pool itself is actually located in Wimpole Park which can still be viewed today.

The History of New Wimpole

This small village was founded just east of Ermine Street in an area which is now part of the Wimpole Hall parkland. Plus, running along the southern boundary is the ancient Roman road that linked Ermine Street to Cambridge many centuries ago. Near Arrington Bridge along the south-west lodge has been found an ancient Roman settlement.

During Roman times this was a very small community that was part of the empire, but as times changed the community itself grew into a small village alongside Whitwell and Wratworth which were eventually absorbed into New Wimpole towards the end of the 13th century. However, the manor of Wratworth did survive until the 17th century.

The parish church of St. Andrew still holds services and is next door to the famed Wimpole Hall which has garnered a considerable amount of attention as a tourist attraction.

Wimpole Hall and Wimpole’s Folly

Located on Wimpole Estate, this impressive house was first constructed in 1640 on what is today 3,000 acres of parkland and farmland that is now owned by the national trust and open to the public. Wimpole Hall is largest house in all of Cambridge and was owned by the Chickeley family for over 250 years. The house itself is quick striking and beautiful, a prime example of fine English architecture that has attracted tourists from all over the UK.
Wimpole’s Folly is a ruin that is located on the same grounds as Wimpole Hall. A striking design that resembles a medieval castle, it was constructed in 1769 and includes a remarkable four-story Gothic tower which dominates the ruins. Currently owned by the national trust, this area is also open to the public for viewing.
