History

The village of Penn has a special association with the United States. It is where William Penn (1644-1718) was born, an English Quaker who founded the colony of Pennsylvania and placed it in the history books as the basis of the American constitution. Penn goes way back, however.

Its original name was Brythonic that meant hill, probably associated with where the Penn village stands — on a promontory of the Chiltern Hills. Although there are no specific dates on when Penn came about, the charming cottages and houses throughout the place provided evidence of its antiquity. The 12th-century church of the Holy Trinity further enforces the age of the town. If that is not enough, the church is also where a Medieval Doom painting was found.

In 1222, Knotty Green was called Nattucas, which was taken from the Old English, nattuc, which means rough grass of tussocks. It got its place on the map in 1680. Several surviving buildings in Knotty Green go as far back as the 15th century, with the timber-framed Baylins Farm dating back to 1450.

Forty Green

Forty Green is the perfect place to commune with nature. It is surrounded by beech woodlands and country lanes that provide a quiet avenue to enjoy leisurely strolls.
