History

The Magna Britannia describes Mentmore in 1808 as “...in the hundred of Cotslow and deanery of Muresly, lies about eight miles to the north-east of Aylesbury.” The Magna Britannia further describes the manor belonging to the Bussel and Zouche families. By 1490, the manor was granted to Sir Reginald Bay. In 1729, the manor was purchased together with the manor of Leadbourne by Lord Viscount Limerick from Mr Legoe, who inherited the property from the Wigg family. The last owner of the manor as stated in the Magna Britannia was Richard Bard Harcourt who purchased the property from James Earl of Clanbrassil (son of Lord Limerick).

St Mary the Virgin Church – a Church of England church that dates back to the 14th century. Monuments to the Wigg and Theed families can be found within the church, as well as a monument to Neil Primrose. The church has a simple structure comprised of three aisles and a clerestory. Mentmore Towers – built for Baron Meyer Amschel de Rothschild in 1855. de Rothschild commissioned Sir Joseph Paxton and GH Stokes (who then became his son-in-law) to design the house. The house was done in Elizabethan style and features great windows and a turreted roofline. Today, the home is being redeveloped into a hotel and golf course.

Ascott – a Jacobean house featuring lots of collections and wonderful gardens. The property was transformed by the de Rothschilds towards the end of the 19th century. In the house you'll find a collection of paintings, furniture and oriental porcelain. The gardens are a mix of formal and natural.

Ashridge Estate – located in Hertfordhire, this country estate and stately home features ancient trees, rolling chalk downlands and lush meadows.
