During the time of Edward the Confessor, the manor was part of the estate of Aluric, the King's thane. It is recorded in the Domesday Book as “Chowdesbury.”

Cholesbury started out as a small, temporary settlement and slowly grew into a hamlet. The population was large enough during the time of Henry III that it was enough to be its own separate manor.
