HISTORY

First mentioned in 692, the village was then known as Heanburg. That name is from the Old English hēan byrig which means “high fortified place.” The village is also mentioned in the Domesdaby Book but as Henberie.

Henbury was once a very large parish: it extended to the River Severn and included King's Weston, Lawrence Weston, Charlton, Easter Compton, Pilning, Northwick and Aust. Parts of the parish were separated to form the civil parishes of Redwick and Northwick and Aust in 1866. By 1901, part of the civil parish was made part of Bristol and more were added between then and 1933.

The civil parish of Henbury was abolished in 1935 and the remaining parts were made part of the civil parishes of Pilning and Severn Beach and Almondsbury.

ATTRACTIONS

Church of St Mary the Virgin – the structure dates back to 1096 and its tower is from the early 13th century. Thomas Rickman performed further restoration work on the church in 1836 and G.E. Street made further changes from 1875-7. The church is a Grade II* listed property. The grave of Scipio Africanus, the West African 18th-century manservant of Charles William Howard, 7th Earl of Suffolk, is in the churchyard.

Henbury Village Hall – a Grade II listed building that is now being used as a French language school for children.

Henbury Leisure Centre – features a 25-metre swimming pool, fitness suite, full-size all-weather pitch, as well as various fitness programmes and classes.

Henbury Lodge Hotel – said to have been built around 1600 as two cottages then transformed into one dwelling in 1712. It's now operated by 1712.
