A civil parish located in West Berkshire, the tiny village of Catmore has the distinction of being the smallest of all parishes in Berkshire with a population of 28. The village itself is located just over five miles southeast of Wantage and it sits about 575 feet above sea level. Although small in nature, countryside is certainly beautiful with rolling hills and woods that offer residents and tourists alike a beautiful setting to enjoy.

History

Despite its small size, Catmore has been around for nearly a millennium as the first records date back to the 11th century when it was known as “Catmere”. Over the centuries, the name of the village has changed slightly in terms of spelling until the 17th century when Catmore became fully established.

The first records of the existence of the village begin when a prominent Saxon known a Ezui owned a manor in the area that was destroyed during the Norman Invasion of 1066. Afterwards, the remains of the manor were taken over by Henry de Ferrers, a Norman baron. Under de Ferrers,Catmore was made part of the Honour of Tutbury.

The manor didn’t appear on the records again until two centuries later when the 6th Earl of Derby took part in the rebellion to oust Edward III. His defeat led to the crown confiscating the manor and his other properties. Over the next century, the Honour of Tutbury was merged with the estate of the House of Lancaster as part of the crown’s properties. The current manor house that sits in Catmore was constructed in the 16th century.

Catmore Today

As a village of just 28 people, Catmore does not offer the many tourist attractions that you find in larger cities. However, thanks to its long history it does provide a hint of life in central England over the centuries. Perhaps not a stopover, but certainly worth driving through to see a small, humble village amid the beautiful countryside.

Catmore’s most distinguishing feature is the Parish Church of Saint Margaret that was originally built after the Norman Conquest, but has been rebuilt over the centuries. Today, the only surviving structures in the church are the north and south doorways long with the font. It was heavily restored in 1850 and used until 1973 when it was declared redundant. In 1999, the Churches Conservation Trust re-opened the building which can now be visited daily.
