Located in Bedfordshire, Whipsnade is a minor village and a civil parish. It is found on the eastward section of the Chiltern Hills, and can be found around 2 and a half miles from the south/south-west of Dunstable. There is also the Whipsnade Park Golf Club, a well-known attraction that welcomes a considerable number of people to the area, further boosting the local economy. In addition to the zoo, there is also a miniature nature reserve found in the northern section of the village, at Sallowsprings. This is managed by a local Wildlife Trust and is a popular hit with local schools, children and touring parties.

In the area you will find a hill figure that has been shaped to look like a lion, and it was originally made for the zoo. An interesting piece of local history revolves around the chalk lion on Bison Hill during the Second World War. This is due to the fact that the chalk lion was covered by a black sheet. This was down to ensure that the landmark was not visible to German bombers. Minimising the number of landmarks that were provided to invading forces was a crucial part of the home campaign during WWII and the local authorities in Whipsnade decided that it was best to keep the lion under wraps until peace time.
