Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the village of Northill is also a civil parish and offers a population of around 2,300. The village itself is located about four miles to the west-north-west of Biggleswade and is located near a T-junction where the Bedford and Ickwell roads meet. The town is situated on an elevated ridge that runs from north to south. The surrounding terrain includes woods and parkland which makes it an ideal location for those who love being in nature.

The parish itself includes the hamlets of Lower & Uppper Caldecote, Hatch, Ickwell, Budna, and Thorncote Green.

History

The history of this location goes back many centuries to the nomadic peoples who traveled through the countryside during pre-historic times. It is part of the ancient Hundred of Wixametree which was a village formally known as North Givell meaning the northern part of the territory that encompassed the River Iyel.

North Givell or North Yevell as one legal record in the 15th century referred to the town was a small community that existed before William the Conqueror came to power in 1066. However, the surviving structures of the town go back to the 14th century and are most exemplified by the thatched roofing that exists on many structures within the town limits.

Some of the surviving structures include the Anglican Church of St. Mary which was fashioned out of ironstone and has been restored over the years. The church also offers some of the best example of painted glass from the 17th century. There have been a few famous people born in Northill, including Sir Humphrey Winch who became the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland in the 16th century and Thomas Tompion who built the Pump Room Clock in 1709 that has served the city of Bath ever since. In fact, you can see the forge that Tompion’s father used as the village blacksmith which is on display at the Green at Ickwell.

Northill Today

All of the residential homes as well as the Anglican church reflect much of the past in the town. There is a public house next to the church called The Crown. However, the village is simply not big enough to support shops, stores, or any real commercial industry.

However, tourists have been known to come through the area, particularly during the Ickwell May Day celebration where a parade of floats and residents travel the short distance to Ickwell on the Ickwell Road. Since at least 1565, the citizens of Northill and Ickwell have been celebrating in this particular manner.
