HISTORY

Azelina, wife of Ralph Taillebois, held the manor of Cockayne Hatley during the time of the Survey. Previously, it had belonged to Ulmar, a thegn of King Edward the Confessor. After Taillebois, overlordship passed to Hugh de Beauchamp who was the founder of the barony of Bedford. In 1515, the manor was held by Edmund Grey.

Cockayne Hatley Hall – formerly known as Cockayne Hatley Mansion. Established by Sir John Cockayne in the 14th century, the hall features elements from early Victorian and Tudor times. The hall was the residence of the Cockayne family until the late 1860s after which several families took on the estate. By 1929, Mr John Whitehead purchased the estate but sold it to the Co-op Farming group after the war. Although the structure fell into disrepair, it has now been restored.

St John's Church – dates back to the 13th century and is located close the the Hall. The church features several works of carved wood and stained glass, most of which are from the abbey of Alne near Charleroi. The works date from 1689 and they were brought back from Flanders by Rev Henry Cockayne Cust, the parish rector from 1806 to 1861, after the Napoleonic wars.
