Banchory Devenick is a village in Aberdeenshire, located just south of the city of Aberdeen, on the North Sea, in the east of Scotland. 
This modern village also shares its name with the historic civil parish that was located on the River Dee until 1891. At that time, the northern part of Banchory Devenick became part of the neighbouring parish of Peterculter, and the southern part retained the original name. “Devenick” derives from Saint Davenicus, who once ministered in the village.

The village is located on the ancient Causey Mounth Road, which connected the River Dee to Stonehaven. It served as the main travel highway for the region beginning in the 12th century and until the modern highway system was built in the 20th century.  When it was built in the Middle Ages, the Causey Mounth was a raised rock causeway over the many bog areas of the area. A number of prehistoric settlements have been found along the road in archaeological digs.

Within Banchory Devenick, a historic graveyard dates to 1157. Other significant historic buildings include Saint Ternan’s Church, an Episcopal parish built in 1831. It is the oldest church building in the Diocese of Brechin. In addition, Lairhillock Inn, a historic coaching inn along Casey Mounth, still stands, though is now used as a school. Finally, Muchalls Castle, a 13th century structure, has significant ties to the English Civil War when a seminal Covenanter gathering took place on the site in 1638. The castle overlooks the North Sea and is an estate surrounded by woodlands and agricultural fields for cattle, sheep, and crops.  It is now a private home.

Portlethen Moss is a nature reserve near Banchory Devenick, located in the town of Portlethen. This wetland, bog area has a wide variety of plants and wildlife within it, as well as archaeological findings from the Middle Ages.  Also located nearby is the Burn of Elsick, a coastal stream that goes through Aberdeenshire on its way to the North Sea. Historically, the mouth of the Burn of Elsick was once known for its plentiful amount of salmon, but overfishing has severely reduced the amount of salmon available each year.
