Oh, I know. I know. You don’t want to be thinking about the garden: it’s cold out there. You want to be curling up on an armchair by the radiator in the living room, preferably with someone bringing you a cup of warm cocoa and a biccie or three.
But to keep your garden looking tip-top, there are a few little tasks which will really pay off if you see to them before the winter really sets in…
1) Sweep up Autumn leaves
Leaves are fine on exposed soil, where you can just leave them and nature to do their thing, but on the lawn, you’re best to sweep them up before they damage the grass. Don’t worry, it’s already November, the trees don’t have many left to drop anyway.
2) Wrap delicate plants
More exotic plants out in your garden might need a little bit of winter warming by now. Straw or hessian wrap around the crowns and trunks of delicate plants can help make sure they survive the winter.
3) Take some cuttings
This is the perfect time of year to take some hardwood cuttings and pot them up with a frame and some compost. Just make sure you stick ‘em in the right way up!
And now, it’s time for that armchair and cocoa. Ooh, marshmallows? Don’t mind if I do.
