With everything that is going on in the world today, our fast-paced lifestyle can take its toll on our emotional health and well-being. Whilst many choose to relax and let go by watching the latest Netflix show, going for walks and being with their friends, there are other ways that we can help alleviate our stress and improve our overall emotional health.
One of the easiest way to boost our happiness is through flowers. Just having flowers in a room helps to trigger happy emotions and can fill a person with a feeling of satisfaction. Best of all, flowers help affect our social behaviour so we are kinder and more positive.
Jeannette M. Haviland-Jones, a Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at the State University of New Jersey conducted an Emotional Impact of Flowers Study to see the affect that flowers can have on our emotional response.
In the study, 147 women were told they would be sent a gift but they were not told what the gift would be. This secrecy helped the researchers gauge their reaction with more honestly since the participants weren't expecting anything in particular.
When the flowers were delivered, the researchers measured both the emotional and behavioural response of the women. What the research found was that:
-Flowers have an immediate effect on the person’s happiness. All the participants expressed a sense of delight and gratitude compared to other gifts.
-The participants reported feeling less anxious and agitated when they received flowers
-The flowers helped increase the the connection and bond between their family and friends.
Dr. Haviland-Jones states. “Now, science shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, they have strong positive effects on our emotional wellbeing.”
